Hamnet
Honestly, this completely shattered me. What an absolute masterpiece. It’s going straight into my top 4, because it had been a long time since a movie made me cry like this in a theater. The way it hit me emotionally was unreal. A story that treats love, grief, and loss with this much care and sensitivity is something truly special. I didn’t know the story beforehand, and maybe that made it hurt even more. It completely broke me.
The performances are on another level. Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley are simply extraordinary, especially Jessie. She’s on a completely different plane here. The range she shows throughout the film is insane, and this is genuinely one of the best performances I’ve seen in a very long time. Paul is incredible too, and I’m honestly surprised he didn’t get more recognition, because his work here is beautiful and devastating in the quietest way. The rest of the cast is also fantastic. Everything feels so natural that you almost forget you’re watching actors, especially the kids. Their performances feel painfully real, and that one child… if you’ve seen it, you know exactly who I mean.
The final scene completely destroyed me. I started crying like a child and couldn’t stop. That moment alone would already justify the entire film. Hearing Paul Mescal reciting Shakespeare there is genuinely breathtaking, one of those scenes that stays with you long after the credits roll.
The soundtrack is gorgeous, especially the piece used in the final scene. It fits the film so perfectly and amplifies the emotion without ever feeling manipulative. The cinematography is stunning too, with beautiful compositions and camera work that fully immerse you in the period. The locations feel alive, warm and tragic at the same time, pulling you straight into that world.
And the story itself… seeing how one of the greatest tragedies ever written was born from love and loss is heartbreaking and beautiful in equal measure. The script is incredibly strong, the pacing never drags, and everything flows naturally toward that devastating ending.
This is a deeply human film. Tender, painful, intimate, and full of soul. I walked out of the cinema completely breathless, emotionally drained, and still trying to understand how that final scene affected me so much. I honestly don’t remember the last time I cried this hard in a movie theater.
