Phantom Thread
This film works on pretty much every level. The staging and camerawork are beautiful and perfectly crafted, which makes every frame look like a painting in a very precise but sort of dreamlike way. PTA’s films almost always have incredible cinematography and scores, but Phantom Thread might be one of his best in both areas.
Jonny Greenwood’s score is perfect for the film, helping to create an atmosphere that matches the story's emotions and the historical setting, making it feel elegant yet slightly unsettling. The fact that he still hasn't won an Oscar for Best Original Score is a prime example of why the Oscars have no credibility.
Daniel Day-Lewis is incredible, like always, but this is definitely one of his best performances. He conveys so much through facial expressions, the way he carries himself, and the small changes in how he interacts with people. It feels completely natural and makes you notice every little detail of how his character thinks and feels.
The film reminds me a lot of In the Mood for Love in how it handles romance. While they’re different in terms of power dynamics and relationships, there are a lot of similarities in how tension builds through small gestures, glances, and unspoken moments, making every interaction feel intimate and meaningful. The ending is perfect, and altogether, it feels like one of PTA’s most fully realized films.
