Misery
Rewatched this today with Rob Reiner’s commentary in the background and it took this 10/10 movie to a 11/10 movie.
Having the director analyse every scene like he is watching the film with you completely changes everything.
This was the perfect film for Rob Reiner to direct as Paul’s story is somewhat similar to his. Rob Reiner did not get kidnapped and forced to write a film, instead he stepped away from what he was known for and done something completely new. Rob was known for Rom Coms and more light hearted films and that’s what everyone expected of him, similar to how everyone knew Paul Sheldon for the Misery books. The fact that this was Rob Reiners first attempt at a thriller is insane.
The decision to take away some of the gruesome moments from the book actually helps the film so much. The removal of some of the incredibly gory scenes from the book makes the movie feel more realistic and psychologically terrifying.
Annie Wilkes is one of THE BEST villains of all time. She isn’t a supernatural alien clown or possessed by spirits, she is just a seemingly completely normal person and that is what makes this film so good. Kathy Bate’s performance is unbelievable and was very deserving of an Oscar.
The way she can switch from a lovely, innocent lady to the nurse from your nightmares is terrifying. She really is a hobbling hero.
In my opinion this movie is a solid 10/10.
Everything from the cinematography to the cast is perfect.
The lack of action that some would find boring actually makes the movie better as it adds to the tension and psychological effect.
Thankfully I am not yet done with Misery as I still have the documentary, Misery Loves Company, to watch. I really can’t wait to watch that to see some behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast. I also have William Goldman’s commentary to listen to but I might not bother with that as I’d rather listen to Rob Reiner than him.
This is THE BEST thriller of all time.
