Sunshine
This was like if Mouthwashing was on steroids.
Holy shit I love sci-fi, holy shit I love drama, and holy shit I love horror. Put them all together, what do you get? The fantastic film of Sunshine with an actual stacked cast now looking back at it. With such great star power in this film, every character felt legit and had really interesting morals and ideas individually.
Two people recommended me this film, a Redditor…and Jacksepticeye…no joke. Months ago when watching Jacksepticeye played Mouthwashing, he said this film was very similar to the game and honesty, Mouthwashing is a very good game with a great story and after getting this film recommended to me once more, I decided to really go in on it, I don’t regret it one bit.
The film didn’t really shift its gears into horror until I’d say the end of the 2nd act and a lot of the 3rd act, but man it shined, hehe. But no seriously when the crew first got into Icarus 1 and it was showing half second blips of the crew from said ship, I was feeling really spooked out and it made me feel uneasy, like something was about to jump out at any moment. Whenever it happened, it felt like how images are used in analog horror, and I mean good analog horror. The gear shift when Pinmaker was revealed to be alive was intense and thrilling. A man fueled by rage, violence, and the sun wanted nothing more than to sabotage humanity’s only hope. Love it. I also really love how they subtly placed small clues referring to Pinbacker’s survival, such as when Mace went to grab a scalpel to kill Trey, there were two scalpels missing and even when it shows the airlock breaking once more after Capa sees Pinbacker again for the first time in his new form, it’s a way of telling the audience like “hey btw Pinbacker was the one who destroyed the airlock system” Really subtle and great execution.
Chris Evans is probably the MVP of this film in my opinion. He really put his all into this film and honestly the direction he’s going with films right now isn’t the best I will say…but he’s still really young and I have no doubt he’ll be back because what he did in this film was sensational and I was deeply connected to his character, hated that he died.
The visuals and soundtrack were very good too. The main musical beat was doing like a 8d thing in my AirPods and it felt all funky and unique, 100% not something I’ve experienced when watching film. Space is just cool, I love space and I love learning about it, so just about every single design of anything was right up my alley, no complaints there.
Live, laugh, love…Cillian Murphy. While being the main star and poster boy of this, I didn’t mention him, obviously he’s fantastic and it was obvious that someday this man would get an Oscar. Look at his early work, you could really see potential and this film continued to add fuel to that great fire.
