Crash
David does it again! It comes as no surprise if you know me that I really love Cronenberg and I’m also sure it comes as a surprise to see I haven’t seen this film before now. The thing I love the most about his films is how they make you think about what you’ve just watched, keeping everything just vague enough so that you can read into whilst feeling like you’ll never understand it like Cronenberg himself. I read this as commentary about pornography as it’s something manmade that people lose themselves in until the usual satisfaction gets old and new extremes must be found. The cars destroy the characters physically, and they can’t help but wish for more despite the destruction caused. Eventually even the most shocking things become stale to the characters, and in the end everyone is dissatisfied after sacrificing so much for temporary thrills. Everything is hypersexualised, but nothing is sexual anymore. I really loved the atmosphere here, especially Shore’s score, and I think the performances were great! The body horror here is also really great , even though most of it comes from dialogue (boobs crushed against the windshield… ouch) and I love what it’s saying about consumerism and sex changing people. The only things holding this back for me are the characters, as I didn’t really feel strongly towards anybody except Ballard and Vaughan. Nonetheless I was still impressed and now I am set on watching every single one of Cronenberg’s movies! Are any of his movies gonna rank higher than The Fly to me? Maybe the next one!
