Shin Godzilla
Easily the best Godzilla movie i’ve ever seen and one of the best monster movies i’ve ever seen. Got to see this in theaters for my first time watching which was an incredible experience. The movie explores the ideas of the politics and government powers of a Godzilla attack in Tokyo. Sounds like a potentially wordy, dense and boring concept but everything comes together to create something that’s far from boring. It is wordy out of the nature of the movie idea but the dialogue is written so smart and gracefully that you never get tired of reading a bunch of subtitles really quickly. And it is dense but so far from the negative connotation that word usually receives. It’s just so full and realized, with fast moving shots between characters to increase the scale of the movie, and quick cuts to keep you guessing what will come next. The Godzilla in this movie is genuinely terrifying and crazy strong, just so stylistic and cool, really love how he looks juxtaposed to the Tokyo skyline shots. That’s another thing, this movie is so full of beautiful and dynamic shots, it makes it feel like a live action Evangelion at times when you compare how that’s animated and this movie is captured. Part of me is so personally drawn to Anno’s style and vision, I can’t help but to absolutely adore this film. I don’t know if I have ever gotten full body goosebumps the way I did when Godzilla first started turning blue and that soundtrack kicked in; actual chills warning. The movie is so complimented and made wholistic with Shiro Sagisu’s gorgeous and tense soundtrack. Digressing aside, I could go on and on about this movie forever i’m so in love with it and impressed with how everything came together perfectly. And i’m so grateful i got to experience this in a movie theater, i can’t stress enough how important that is for movies.
