Hereditary
I loved it. A film that really scared me at the end (the mother flying against the ceiling...). I didn't really think the film revolved around sacrifices and summoning spirits, but I loved it. What shocked me was the acting and the excellent script. The character development throughout the story was superb. There's the son who blames himself but tries to ignore it by withdrawing further into himself. He wonders what's wrong, and his mother doesn't help him. Then there's the father, who, in my opinion, reacted perfectly. He tried to be present, to keep a cool head, and to look for rational explanations. And then there's the mother, who couldn't process her grievance, blaming everyone around her, and finally trying to find her daughter. Beyond the film itself, what I loved most was the message: how far can one go in grievance? These kinds of scams involving spirit summoning happen in real life, often at a difficult time, like the death of a loved one. The scenes that made my heart ache were the dinner party discussion; the acting of the three actors was simply incredible. Then there was the moment when the mother almost burned her son in his sleep (he'll always think she really meant to do it, even though she was unconscious...). Then the final ritual... in fact, the son was the target... Full of twists and turns, I loved it; I was constantly breathless.
Looking back, I also see their story as a tragic one. Everything was already at its worst when we get to the beginning: the grandmother is dead, the daughter is lost, the son is uncomfortable in his social circle, the mother is anxious, and the father is overbearing. Then the story progresses, and everything gets worse and worse. We're led to believe that the trigger is the daughter's death, but in reality, the misfortune was already there. This story wasn't their destiny; it was their tragedy. They were already doomed to die, or at least to end badly. And this is reinforced even more by the title "Hereditary." Everything has already been given, passed down, inherited. Even if they try to escape, it is their family's misfortune that will haunt them. We cannot escape our origins.
