Megan Is Missing
As with The Snow Society, I prefer to give it a 5 because these are true stories. For this film, the director said no, but there's a lot of speculation that he was actually inspired by a story suppressed by the parents, so I'm not sure. In any case, stories like these happen every day.
And I think I would have given it a rating close to 4 or 5 anyway.
The film felt very real, which I really liked. But it mostly just annoyed me more than anything else. Annoyed because I really felt a sense of injustice and anger towards people like the kidnapper, like, why?
Furthermore, I found it more than outrageous. The TV news anchor kept going on about how beautiful Megan was and whatnot. Every sentence was, "This very beautiful young girl." As if everything boiled down to that, as if if she were ugly she would be less important. And what's the point of mentioning her popularity and explaining her grades and all that? It's not the first time I've seen this; I've heard it on the news before. And I think the director might have done it on purpose.
Then again, the party itself disgusted me; it was infuriating to see them all using each other like objects. Which really represents the film; they truly seemed like used objects. It was so unfair.
Then Megan's friends blamed Amy, and the girl started insulting her and telling her it was her fault. You could really tell she was upset, because she probably blamed herself more than Amy. Since she was the one who gave Megan the guy's contact information, and besides, she liked Megan. Poor girls.
It doesn't really surprise me, not as much as people say. Actually, for me, you can watch this film if you're already aware of the dangers. Not just the dangers of meeting strangers, just danger in general. Going out alone, fast cars passing by, your drink at a club... at any moment you could be kidnapped and experience the same thing. If you're not fully aware of this, it's best not to see this film. If, like me, you are aware and already quite careful, even if never quite enough, then the film won't scare you as much. In my case, I felt more of a sense of disgust and injustice.
