Melancholia
A film delivering a multitude of nuances through emotional symbolism and curated through an evolving relationship regarding sisters in the midst of distraught. I feel like I picked up so many little notations from this film. It’s complexity is what had me fascinated as well as the authentic performances by THE Kirsten, Gainsbourg, and that little boy who shitting. The start was a little slow to me, but then when we got into chapter two it all started to kind of make sense to me. Justine slowly started to let go of life little by little and began to be engulfed by melancholy, both figuratively and literally as the time is nearing. She is the embodiment of this planet and has been letting go of the earth that’s trying to hold on to her, such as her Husband, her family, her Job; letting those things go. Thus, remaining Claire.
Claire on the contrary is still here, she has earth’s gift of life in her and she sort of embodies that in a way with her motherly like nurturing nature, she still continues to share the life in her with her sister trying to be motherly and show her how it should’ve been growing up since they had that shitty mother. At this point however Justine is already detached and accepting of the reality that’s soon becoming and she bathes is the melancholia naked on the rocks, while her sister watches her calmness in a time like this igniting her paranoia even more, she goes searching for answers her life (John) is trying to hide from her to keep her calm as we can see he was obviously losing his shit as well. Then when claire realizes there’s no life left for her she becomes melancholic as well, but not because she was initially depressed but because the objectively well off life she had for herself was fading. Nevertheless, they became one of the same state strengthening their connection more than ever.
Melancholia is just gonna pass right in front of us. And it's gonna be the most beautiful sight ever.
