A Clockwork Orange
I originally saw this when I was 13, yeah….didn’t really get it.
You know, coming back to Clockwork Orange, I can’t help but love its sick and twisted tale of morality. The way Kubrick manages to make you hate the character Alex DeLarge, yet in the second half he almost makes you feel sympathy for one of the worst people. It’s not easy to do, especially when we’re talking about HIM.
The way Stanley Kubrick makes this disgusting, dystopian UK and makes it so weirdly beautiful? It felt so futuristic and in ways ahead of its time. I can’t stop thinking about how genius Kubrick is by the end of the film. Managing to actually flip the tables, make the villain the victim of past encounters. Not to mention how it poorly spits on the government and its system. In a lot of ways I was questioning how to feel on this, it’s disturbing for countless reasons, snd the most obviously being his ending of, “I was cured alright”. Showing that he’s gone back to his devilish ways.
At times I felt a bit nauseous watching it’s overstimulated scenes, specifically with Alex’s “treatment”, which is where it really starts to turn into a question of morality and if the government are almost as bad as him. The case of, “fighting fire with fire”. Which leads to more chaos and destruction and as shown gets nowhere. To be honest I have no idea if I’m being an idiot, but this is my take away from the film, that there’s no morally correct side in this film, as much as you want thwre to be the second half proves it just won’t happen. In some ways it’s a reflection on how fucked up society and the government really are.
Being honest, in the end I can’t help but still be impressed and amazed at the artist that is Stanley Kubrick. He created things that some were too afraid to say, they all have their simple plot descriptions however until you’re truly watching one, there’s something way deeper to explore. That’s why I seriously love his work, he’s a genius even if he WASNT a great guy. But that’s why I separate the artist from the art. There’s so much to delve into in each of his films, whether its deeper meaning is more obscure or easier to understand. Each one usually has a specific thing he’s tying to put across. I love him for that and he’s a genuine phenomenal filmmaker.
Also this film looks STUNNING on 4k.
