American Psycho
If I saw this with someone and they turned to me saying that they thought it was so sigma, the gun loaded itself I swear.
I’m currently watching some deleted scenes and behind the scenes with the commentary of the director, as I have a steelbook I watched this one. They’re interesting and I want to see what was cut out and maybe learn why. It’s also really interesting to see everyone’s take on set and talking about their character or how the film is going and scenes etc.
The film hasn’t dated since I last saw it, it’s still genuinely incredible. The pure genius mind of Mary Harron, which would come as a shock to the hard looksmaxer fans of the film who think it’s cool, and it’s the ideal lifestyle, without realising its a legit satire. I liked how she mixed very dark comedy that had me honestly laughing a lot more than the first time I saw it; mixed with moments of pure unsettling horror.
It’s also quite visually striking at times, a lot of moments looked gorgeous and some in a disturbingly creepy but artsy way. The characters are also really well written; I don’t mean oh “they’re sigma”, I mean they’re so well written for the style of the film. They’re all such complete arseholes and genuinely so unfiltered it’s hysterical. It’s intriguing on the surface of seeing the characters and they’re acting on the first watch, while on the second there’s some subtle things you can pick up on.
I also saw mentions of this being sort of a gay film? As in like he’s portraying himself as a masculine man who kills women, eats them, has sex with them, this player. When really deep down he’s actually not into that, he’s a quiet, lonely man. I’m not sure how I feel about this: I can see it, don’t get me wrong but I need more context if that makes sense. I haven’t explained it well either, and there’s a whole discussion about it that you can find on the internet. I just think that for me I’m not sure, because of how much he objectifies women in this film, but then it could be a part of his made up character trying to fit in.
Some of the deleted scenes are so dark or hilarious, some of them show an even darker path they could have gone down, whereas others show the more hilarious satirical side. I think most are interesting though as they go further into the satirical side of the film, which has a lot of interesting takes on moments like society, as Jared Leto was discussing on his interview.
I don’t see this film getting old, I feel it’s something I could come back to again and again. I love it a lot, not for a stupid ignorant I relate to him way, but in a sense of truly understanding this masterpiece of a film. For the gay theory, search it up as I’ve most likely butchered the discussion on it as I’m a bit of an idiot, so if you want a clearer and more depth discussion go on YouTube etc.
