Challengers
Tashi I hate you so much, if you support her you clearly don’t understand the film and you watching it with your eyes closed.
First off we don’t talk about the last review I did of this, because it’s one: fucking awful, and two: it’s one of my more than thirteen reasons why.
I’m pleased I finally got round to rewatching this, because man did it eat up the other contenders on the 2024 list. I originally “saw” this and was ranting about some random shit in my review, I may have been on something but to be honest I don’t believe it saw it. So coming back to it I wasn’t surprised I didn’t remember 90% of it, but man did I not understand any of it the first time round.
Another thing that was insane was the parallels throughout the film; I can’t believe some of them, they were such genuine jaw droppers, and I love Luca Guadagnino on how he can make such great emotions all go together to make this insanely creative, magnificent piece of work, truly a monumental moment in cinema. The editing is also immaculate in this film, whether it was the first person shots of the players/the tennis balls, or even some of the shots of the characters, for example: a parallel, or even a close shot of the sweat trickling down/dropping onto the ground.
Phenomenal soundtrack too, I know everyone was talking about the soundtrack on release and I clearly missed that crowd and the film to be fair. So hearing this with only knowing a couple was a honest to god treat for my ears, they were eating good for these two hours. I loved how the soundtrack also did such work with the scenes, like spicy ones or manipulative moments that just added that much more “ooooo”.
Also propaganda I will not be falling for: Patrick and Art don’t love each other, Tashi is a girl boss. Thank you that is all the propaganda of this film I will not be falling for.
