Arrival
If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?
Could easily be my favourite Denis. Honestly, it’s comparing perfection versus perfection which is arbitrary. Maybe my favourite filmmaker ever at this point.
Sci-Fi movies often seem un relatable as we do not see our lives in these vastly different worlds.
This is the opposite.
So much humanity in it all. The good moments, the bad, all preserved in memory. It’s a Sci-Fi movie that goes full Aftersun at some points. It’s also a drama first, which helps the relatability.
Language is such a fascinating concept and I love all the little fun facts or stories or thought provoking ideas this brings up on how we communicate.
Let’s not forget that this is one of the most visually striking movies of the century. And a really good score that gets overshadowed by the use of “In the nature of daylight”. Amy Adams just might be my favourite performance by any actress ever.
I was curious to rewatch this after knowing the twist but forgetting most of it, and it’s definitely not a movie that gets any worse by knowing what happens. Very comparable to Interstellar and I would even give the edge to this, but again perfect on perfect is stupid.
