“you are my dream … how could i be ashamed of you?”
don’t know who i related to more: madi, who couldn’t hold a conversation without bringing up movies every other minute or the dude on facebook that watched the dark knight six times in theaters
before the movie, there was a short little introduction from sean wang where he made a comment about the film being a love letter or appreciation film towards immigrant mothers and i couldn’t agree more — that monologue from chris’ mom where she describes her own dreams and aspirations, as well as the things she seemingly “gave up” in another life, only to conclude that she couldn’t ask for more. i remember my mom commenting once about how her dream job was to be an interior designer and it’s something i’m reminded of whenever she buys some new decoration for the house and she seems to light up as she attempts to figure out where to put it or what to add to different rooms; such a small gesture that probably means the world to her, such like chris’ mom and her paintings, and really had that monologue hitting home for me
this movie was also peak nostalgia and made me wish i had grown up in a time where myspace and facebook was normalized and you could just decorate your pages however you wanted in order to fully showcase your personality; was also reminiscing with the way that everyone texted ;p think we need to bring old school emoticons back!!! also loved how perfectly sean wang was able to capture the feeling of isolation and loneliness within growing up and how we often feel stranded and alone in the world, even when that’s not the case — it’s still a feeling that’s all too familiar even at the age of 21 and was almost comforting to see depicted; absolutely obsessed with this film and it’s definitely a classic for me
