Paterson
Life is so monotonous and we try to push through by forcing ourselves to believe our dreams, but the hard truth is that not all of us are cut out to achieve them. We try to convince ourselves we are poets or rock stars or artists in the making, but maybe we are just daughters or sons or mothers or fathers or wives or husbands. Maybe we craft our dreams to grapple onto the slim chance that one day we could be important. Maybe we are only really important in the context of the relatively few lives we touch. Maybe none of us are important at all.
HOWEVER
Maybe what’s beautiful is that we don’t need to be famous or exceptionally talented to enjoy something. I’ve shed more tears watching older gentlemen playing guitar at county fairs or small music festivals than at concerts packed with thousands of people watching some millionaire. I’ve been moved more deeply watching friends perform high school musicals than watching professional performers. Fame doesn’t determine greatness. What’s truly great is getting to spend your life doing what you love, whether that’s for a crowd of 3 or 30,000. I may only ever be a mediocre writer, singer, actress, or baker…but if I can still die saying that my life was full of writing, singing, acting, and baking…then maybe it doesn’t matter so much if that life was small and hidden.
