Superman
Oh the things that I could say about this movie. I could go on for hours and hours how much I loved it. I think that not only is David now my favorite Superman but this may be my favorite superhero live action movie that I have ever seen.
The portrayal of each character was magnificent and perfect in every way to me.
David’s ability to seamlessly shift between Superman and Clark was perfect. Especially in the interview with Lois.
This movie shows who Superman is as a character and a symbol of hope. And it also shows how Clark Kent is more than simply Superman through the showing of his loving relationship with his parents, Ma and Pa Kent. He’s just as much human as any of us. It doesn’t matter that he came from a different planet. He holds the values that are held by humans so very deeply and I think that makes him so very human.
Lois was also completely spot on for me with her refusing to go easy on Clark when interviewing Superman. She’d never go easy on anyone, even someone she loved.
Lex Luthor in this movie was done so well. He was so accurately portrayed in how he’s straight up so envious and driven by his hatred for Superman that he would kill every person on the planet just for the shot at killing Superman. A Lex Luthor who is so angry that he crashes out so hard and cries out of anger when he’s beaten by Superman is the most real Lex that you can get.
On top of everything, I think that the addition of Krypto was amazing and making him just a silly dog at his core made me fall so very in love with him instantaneously.
My last comment is focusing in on the plot with the real world conflict, genocide, being touched on in this movie through the lens of a superhero. It’s a very real thing that is currently happening in our world to Palestine and the way that such a tragedy was portrayed in the way it was I believe is something that is very important. It also adds onto who Superman is as a character. He doesn’t give a shit about politics. What he does give a shit about is people and people being murdered so of course he would step in and if you think he wouldn’t then you’re not thinking of Superman anymore.
There were some moments that weren’t my favorite but everything else outweighs them. This is the best DC movie in years and it really does a great job at renewing your love for Superman.
It could be recency bias but I’m floored by how incredible James Gunn did with this movie and this character. He deserves his flowers along with David, Rachel and honestly the whole cast.
