Sentimental Value
it’s not that hard for me to be moved by a film, but i feel like trier knows how to play this game a bit too well. it’s been a long time i’ve been affected by a film this much, so much that i immediately saw it a second time and, so much that i wanted to reconsider my rating system. all timer and i don’t want to keep this long but, i think the reason a lot of people feel detached by this is that trier doesn't let the film end the conversations properly. there are so many threads, conversations, fights that could be resolved by mere words and sentences that could fix everything if life worked like dialogue. but it is not that easy to say those big words and saying the right thing at the right time when it’s not in a script. this can be seen as a “film about a film” but the greatest thing it does for its very special gustav borg is that he finally sees the contrast between the words said and the words said not. between intention and action. between caring and actually saying it. and somewhere in that gap he realizes that it’s not too late, in fact its never too late.
ps: stellan and reinsve are on whole different levels and enough praise has been said about them (they’re flawless) but inga ibsdotter lilleaas absolutely shines pulling one of the most personal performances of this decade and elle fanning probably gives her career best supporting performance. thinking like top 20 of all time.
