Aftersun
sometimes, when we were children, we saw our parents, especially our father, as people who were always fine. in our eyes, they were strong, dependable, and always trying to make us happy through their efforts. but as children, we couldn’t fully see the struggles they were going through, whether it was depression, financial pressure, or something else entirely. to us, they only showed the good parts of themselves.
through this film, an adult sophie tries to question and understand why her father left her, revisiting fragments of the past through the vacation videos she once recorded. they swim, joke around, and spend time together like any ordinary father and daughter, but something deeper seems to exist just below the surface. it’s calm and understated, but it hits with a quiet force. it’s a slow, emotional film that makes you think about the small moments you missed, especially with people you wish you understood better.
