Silence
Great film and one of the best of the 21st century. I do think it’s Scorsese’s most underrated film and seeing him tackle religion is always so impressive. I love the themes this film explores and from what I’ve seen it’s really unique, the oppression explored as well as the strength of faith displayed is so moving and this message is delivered through the brilliant performance of specifically Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver who both deliver brilliant performances. It is really brutal but the Scorsese explores something that is portrayed as more brutal through the abandonment of faith and the struggle these people go through whilst attempting to remain loyal to there god. It’s truly insightful and you really feel the power of faith to the extent we find at the end that even though the last priest does not talk or pray to god nor does he preach his faith has remained even when people think he had lost it, even after all the unholy things that he has done against God his faith remains, it opens the question of what does religion really require, solely faith? Even after all the unholy actions performed? Or maybe just asking for forgiveness? After performing blasphemy time and time again? Or must you die protecting your faith and acting on it? All these are explored through a plethora of different deep characters and perspectives. It’s a moving story and a brilliant film.
