Superman
This movie is great. And those last scenes hit you. Seriously, one of the rare gems of a superhero movie that work on all levels. Story, action, message. At least that’s all a superhero movie needs in my opinion.
Major Spoiler Warning if you’ve clicked on this without realising this review contains spoilers.
First, I wanna say how perfect the world-building is. The way this quickly sets up the characters and setting is perfect. Getting straight into character arcs; storyline, action. It perfectly sets the tone.
The way the ending is put together is so beautiful. You watch Lex lose everything in front of his bare eyes and it shadows around him. And Superman’s speech at the end, genuine chills. The way everything falls into place and conveys a message of hope is fantastic. I would also like to mention, although knowing all of his wrong doings, you’ve gotta feel for Lex in those final scenes, I have to say. He just broke down and described his motive in a way that was so tragic.
Like I said before, the message this contains is so beautiful. You watch Clark lose it all, and gain it back in a heartfelt ending that you really feel. It does all of this so well.
And the war scenes, where everyone cheers for superman, was so empowering (First time watching I was a little disappointed when it turned out the Justice Gang came). That’s only because I felt it would have been better to actually see everyone’s reaction to him in the flesh, especially the children, but that’s just me.
And the way this whole thing plays out is just so great. Masterclass from James Gunn.
I would say, if you somehow haven’t gotten around to watching this yet, you need to. Even if you’re not a fan of superhero stuff, I’d be surprised if you didn’t like this.
100% would recommend, great rewatch overall.
