Lady Oscar

Everyone who enjoyed *Marie Antoinette —seriously, please watch Lady Oscar*. This film is such a hidden gem, and I honestly think it deserves way more love than it gets.
I’m a big Jacques Demy fan 🙏 and this one really surprised me in the best way. It’s the first time I’ve seen him direct a film in English instead of French, and honestly? I was kind of relieved because my French is so bad (thank you Demy for sparing me the subtitles struggle this time). Even in English, though, the film still carries that very specific Demy magic — the softness, the theatricality, the colours, the little bittersweet touches in every scene.

The acting here goes so hard. Catriona MacColl as Lady Oscar completely sells the emotional complexity of the role — torn between duty, gender, love, class, all of it — and Christine Böhm is fantastic too. They both bring so much heart to every moment. It never feels over-the-top, just sincere in that classic, old-school way.

The costumes? Gorgeous. Like truly, gorgeously detailed and rich, powdered wigs, embroidery, dramatic capes… you get the idea. If you’re into anything vaguely historical or period-drama-coded, you’ll eat this up. And the music absolutely fits the tone: elegant, dramatic, sweeping in all the right places.
I honestly never felt bored watching this. It’s not one of those period films that drags its heels or drowns you in court politics. It flows really well, keeps the emotional stakes grounded, and gives you just enough melodrama to feel indulgent without going full soap opera.
If you’re a fan of costume dramas, French revolution stories, or just beautifully shot, character-driven films, pleaseee give this one a go. It’s kind of niche, kind of campy, definitely underrated, and totally worth your time.
