Sinners
I don’t log films when I rewatch them cause I don’t see the point but I just have to with this one cause I can’t express how much I fucking love this film and my first review didn’t give my thought justice cause I tried to not ramble but idc I’m going to ramble cause it’s a fucking masterpiece that deserves to be spoken about at length. Every single performance in this is beyond amazing I’m constantly in awe every time I rewatch it and I’m constantly asking people around me if they’ve seen it and that they should if they haven’t. I wish I could rate it more than 5 stars cause I would. Michael b Jordan got that Oscar and I jumped for joy he deserved it so much the way he plays smoke and stack is absolutely insane he makes me forget that I’m watching one actor play two characters and he’s not actually a twin. The attention to detail he did for both of them is insane with how he walks, his body language, facial expression plus stack having a dimple, different tone of voice and I’m pretty sure he had them be different size shoes. He did so fucking good cause he didn’t just play two characters he played three if you include vampire stack. The fact he’s the sixth black person in 98 years of Oscar’s history to win best actor is actually sickening and only Halle berry and Michelle yeoh are the only poc to have won best actress. I fucking love Wunmi, I loved her in Loki and was so excited to see her in this and the second I saw her on the big screen I was manifesting that Oscar that should of been hers she was so snubbed. I love Annie’s character so much and I love how she’s taken seriously and not dismissed, especially by smoke, when she senses that something isn’t right, she’s such a strong character and so important to the story and her hoodoo practice and spiritual connection being an important part of the story. I love the relationship between Annie and smoke and the way they both portrayed it’s like you can actually feel the deep connection they have from the very first second you see them on screen together. This being Miles break out role is just perfect he’s amazing in this we literally end and start the film with sammie and his performance is outstanding he should have been nominated. I’m still raging that ugly wife beater won over Delroy, it pissed me off so much cause his performance was just the typical angry racist misogynistic white man character yet Slim was such an important and great character. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY OMFG INSANEEE!!! I really really love cinematography it’s always been one of my favourite things about films and this one is just beyond stunning. Autumn Durald Arkapaw winning the Oscar as not only the first woman in Oscar history but also the first black person and first of Filipino decent to ever win an Oscar for best cinematography and she’s also the first woman to be director of photography to film on IMAX film. Nearly 100 years of the academy and first having ‘first to win’ speaks volume beyond measure. The films intro is gorgeous and stunning I love it. The switching between aspect ratio is so good making us feel more immersed in scenes with more emotion and action when it switches to the bigger one. One thing I really like is when we see wide shot of Bert and Joan’s home and the juke joint there’s vultures circling it already telling us there’s death that’s gonna be there. I also love how Annie made the protection necklace for smoke and it’s proven to have been working when stack can’t bite him which I also think might be the reason smoke is the one to kill the snake when it jumps cause he’s the protected one. When remmick is bert and Joan’s door it’s such a subtle thing but he switches his accent when he noticed they’re kkk showing that Irish people are also at the time heavily oppressed as well. The ‘I lied to you’ scene is just phenomenal I love it so much it’s so beautiful. A frame I love is when we meet the twins outside the jukebox joint and stack has the outside behind him and smoke has the juke joint behind him, beautiful foreshadowing. The costumes in this are so good. The style difference between stack and smoke gives a look into their past in Chicago with smoke having a more Irish influence in his style and stack having a more Italian. I like that as well Annie has deep blue outfits for her deep connection to smoke and mary having light pink toned outfits like a diluted red for her connection to stack but the light pink showing the disconnect they’ve had over the years but still connected. Sammies costumes also reflecting his relationship with the twins with the start he’s more of stacks style and the end when we see him in the 90’s being more smokes style. I also love that when smoke goes to Grace and Bo and asks about a sign they say they’ve only got one colour and that colour being red and having the juke joints name written in it is another foreshadowing cause in East Asian culture it’s seen as bad luck and related to death to write a name in red and also stacks colour being red and smokes blue being known as ‘haint blue’ to ward off spirits linking right back to Annie and South African American culture I think it is. The vampires also represent colonialism, either tho Remmicks own home land was taken from him it’s also what he’s doing to black culture at the juke joint and it’s important people know that. Another thing is when smoke is dying at the end and sees Annie tells smoke to put the cig cause she doesn’t want smoke on their baby and then calls him Elijah instead of smoke cause that’s the side of him she wants to cross over to them both. This film is just filled with so much love and appreciation for black culture and their history and also pointing out in parts the history of Irish peoples oppression through Remmick. I’ll never understand people mad at Grace for inviting them in cause any mother would do that to protect their child. This is a phenomenal film and such a good horror with such heavy meaning and symbolism. Theres so much more I could talk about I really really love this film Ryan Coogler is a fucking brilliant writer and director his filmography is amazing so happy he got that Oscar still crazy he’s only the second black person to win best writer. Ludwig fucking killed it with the soundtrack and score in this I’m obsessed with it. Every Oscar this won is beyond deserved and they should of won even more for everything they were nominated for and has still made Oscar history with being the most nominated film ever with 16 nominations and the fact it didn’t win best picture pisses me off cause it deserved it so much it actually doesn’t make sense how the academy voters can vote it for best actor, screenplay, cinematography and score but snub it with the others. Well I mean I know why cause the academy is racist no sugar coating it. I love rewatching this and noticing new things every time the entire film is just pure genius.
