North & South
I'd been interested in watching this for a long while now particularly because of reviews praising it for its romance, but I'd been a put off due to its social themes. Now that I have watched it I can safely say that I was a fool for not viewing it earlier. "North and South" is in equal parts a tender romance and a commentary on social class, labour conditions, and gender division. Despite not having an overt stance on industrial issues, we are shown the plight of the mill workers and can empathise with their resistance against authority.
The romance between Margaret and Mr Thornton was beautifully done. Their initial dislike for one another due to their different backgrounds to their understanding and love for one another due to their character development was done gradually and felt natural. Loved the side characters too but it was unwarranted how half of them died in the last 2 episodes.
The ending, with Margaret and Thronton's reunion and realisation of their shared feelings was quite satisfying to watch. The soundtrack was done quite well and added to the plot. Overall I had a great time watching this and I can't recommend this enough.
