Squid Game
On the surface - Squid Game is an excellent show that you have no choice but binge, and you just can't take your eyes off of it.
If you feel that way you've likely fallen to a trap in which you are the one who's being made fun of.
Squid Game is a reality show. You are watching it live just as the VIPs on the show itself. The only features that get you invested in this show are the exact features that got those douchebag millionaires invested in it: it's dangerous, it's bloody, and it has no consequences for you. You are just a watcher.
It sounds smart when I say it like that, but behind those symmetrical sets, tenseful games and fucked up gore, hides a mediocre show that tries to hit way too many subjects, and ends up missing them all.
As I said before, this show has virtually no entertainment value beyond the games themselves, and loving this show would be just as loving the actual show as a VIP viewer, the only difference is you're being tricked into it.
The show tries to make you feel like it has actual substance beyond those cheap thrills, tricking your senses with 4K cinematography, colorful sets and a foreign language. Yet, as soon as the Americans start speaking English, the whole act is falling apart and you see the real value of this show - a mediocre, fucked up reality show filled with cheesy dialogue and cliché scenes.
The American actors gave some of the worst performances I've ever seen on screen, and I do believe it is also due to the script and direction.
In conclusion, squid game tries to persuade you it has some deep philosophical and social criticism in it, but it's nothing more than a mask to a much shallower and basic show, abusing a very easy and lazy formula.
