Hot Fuzz
This is my favourite film of all time and I think the greatest comedy ever (closely followed by Shaun of the Dead).
It is a genuinely hilarious comedy with some of the best one liners I’ve ever seen, probably up there as the most quotable film of all time, with incredible direction from Edgar Wright who’s use of visual comedy and general camera work is so impressive, he is a phenomenal director and I think this is his best work.
Hot Fuzz has an incredibly heartwarming relationship between the two leads as well at the heart of it, almost seeming romantic at times (due to the originally planned love interest for Nicholas being cut, but instead of getting rid of the lines they just gave them to Danny) it’s their friendship and chemistry that makes the duo so likeable and makes you root for them as they both slowly become closer as the film goes on.
Most importantly however, the writing is absolutely incredible with so many seemingly insignificant details actually either being great joke pay offs or important to the plot. None of the dialogue is wasted meaning the film just feels so clever and well done.
In addition to all this it has a stacked cast of British legends, with particularly great performances from Jim Broadbent and Timothy Dalton, but the comedic highlights are the two Andy’s and Olivia Colmans character.
Despite it being a comedy, this film has a genuinely great plot twist and enthralling story throughout which keeps you hooked amidst the laughs. Also some good gory scenes. It’s serves as a great tribute to action films, by spoofing them at times but actually paying homage while the juxtaposition of recreating these action scenes in a quintessential small British village is a genius concept.
Overall I believe this is a perfect comedy and a perfect film, but above all else it is just so enjoyable to watch and I would recommend to anyone.
Simon Pegg Nick Frost and Edgar Wright should be immensely proud of their work on the Cornetto trilogy.
