Hamlet
this film rules. WHAT are you guys on about. the only major flaw i can pin on it is that his mother is absolutely not old enough to be his mother, and he routinely kisses her on the lips. as an adaptation of hamlet, this is near perfect. it captures the feeling of the play beautifully. i absolutely adore the ghost scenes and the beating heart sound. the film sets are beautiful, and as others have mentioned, are very much reminiscent of german expressionism ala the cabinet of dr. caligari among others. laurence olivier is a force in this film. eileen herlie is also magnificent, and i particularly love the scene where polonius is killed. the intensity in the lines makes the older language barrier disappear. this is quite stunning in my opinion, and rather haunting as i think shakespeare intended.
