Red Beard
Oh my goodness, Kurosawa.
The great thing about Akira Kurosawa's filmography is how different some of his films truly are. He excelled in so many different ways. I absolutely loved Red Beard beyond words. It’s sentimental, calm, full of compassion and characters that show kindness to others who’ve never felt it in their shattered upbringing.
Furthermore, Kurosawa throws you into the front seat of a doctor’s experience, with both physical and mental toll and how it’s like seeing people suffer and at their last moments of life. Trying to give something in an already shattered world full of pain and grief everywhere you look. Some of these scenes are genuinely incredible to experience and even better with Kurosawa’s attention to detail with the camera, sucking us into it all.
This being the last time Kurosawa and Mifune ever worked together makes this movie more meaningful in my opinion. They truly went out with a masterpiece. The best actor and director duo we may ever see.
