Oldboy
coming into this, I really had no idea what to expect from Oldboy. This film is one of those experiences that knocks you off center and knocks you into a new reality.
Oldboy is a brutal, sad, vengeful story between two men who simply will not let a grudge go. Dae Su is a Korean man who one day gets imprisoned for 15 years and is subsequently framed for his wife's murder. The story revolves around his quest to find out who did this to him and make them pay the price for what they did.
Woo-Jin (who is the antagonist of the story) is the perfect example of a truly evil antagonist, a man with no purpose in life except to make Dae Su's life hell on earth.
Dae Su on the other hand simply wants one thing and one thing only, Vengeance.
That hallway scene too….. so godamn good
Throughout the film, you see Dae Su’s mission to unravel this mystery, although the more he unravels it the more and more complex it gets.
I also have never been so caught off guard by a twist in my life. I won't spoil it because this film has to be watched with no prior knowledge, but wow just wow.
Truly some of the best writing in all of cinema.
Ultimately Woo-Jin breaks Dae Su, to the furthest possible breaking point for a man. That last sequence in Woo-Jin’s penthouse is chilling. 15 years of mental warfare, culminating in a complete win for Woo-Jin.
The writing, cinematography, and acting, are all top-tier. Park Chan-wook ladies and gentlemen.
I cannot recommend this film enough, truly a life-changing experience and once again Korean Cinema tops Hollywood.
100/100.
Laugh and the world laughs with you; Weep and you weep alone…….
