Sinners
THIS IS WHAT I WANT IN CINEMAA.
Might be a long review cl.( mixed feelings tbh)
In a cinemascape flooded with unoriginal themes, movies, and remakes that painfully falter to reach the authentic pinnacles of success of its OG counterparts seemingly mecahnically churned day in and day out, films recently have felt hollow to me.Plots and symbolism and even intentions of characters lacked the full fledged moral greyness and room for interpretation, that makes films appeal to that human part of us,it's like big studios churn out films to turn our brains off and grossly underestimates the intelligence and wants of it's audience, everything feels so spoonfed and overcurated than that of true creation(of course there are execeptions) .However, watching Sinners gives me hope for originality.Coogler's love for blackness oozes throughout the film, from the warm lighting made for melanated skin,to that once scene ifykyk where black music almost seemed to envelope the cinema( I also just love Marvin Gaye so that was always gonna have brownie points),
Coogler invites the audience to feel and think, inviting us to a greater connection.I could go on and on about all my theories and ideas,(the native americans, the crafting of Remmick as Irish, why tf Grace really had to open the door cuz it lk pmo,the parrallels between chinese immigrants and african americans, how tf did Cornbread get that name and how can i get it too) but I guess what I'm tryna say is that Sinners perhaps through the narrative device of vampires and non people reminds us truly what it means to be human again and that is why I LOVE COOGLER.
Sidenote: Why the hell did Pearline not eat the garlic, out here wasting time, had me so confused, cuz it really wasn't that serious and -😤.
However I do have some grievances, for a two hour long film,it still felt slightly rushed despite haveing a rather long intro and it seemed like the film was not a horror or a drama, quickly turning into a Tom Cruise esque action and I found myself constantly trying to grasp one intresting storyline or element that quickly disappeared with true depth not resulting,I also wish I just knew way more about the characters to have a stronger emotional investment and finally while I enjoyed and liked this film,I left the cinema thinking hard what it specifically wanted me to take away from it
