Sinners
(28th April) late review.
Even better rewatch. This has become an all time favourite.
Almost two movies in one Ryan Coogler seamlessly creates a film about community and music and its influence on culture as well as a survival horror with vampires that somehow mold together perfectly by the end. Yet there’s still so much more going on.
There’s so much coogler is saying in the film that isn’t hard to see but it’s presented in such a beautiful and entertaining way. From the start you can already tell this is a film that has heart and passion, the beautiful ultrawide film mixed with IMAX gives so much room to see and feel everything within the frame. Michael B Jordan is genuinely incredible, playing the twins who are and entirely different types people and mixed with cooglers use of direction you forget they're played by the same person. Oscar deserved.
The score can’t go unnoticed. Ludwig Göransson gives one of the grittiest, emotional and soulful scores that perfectly encapsulates the film and it’s been on repeat for me ever since I first watched it. Going from Oppenheimer to this as well damn.
Also Irish vampire was just a chefs kiss. Implementing Irish history and how it influences remmick and the rocky road jig was incredible.
