Pan's Labyrinth
Del Toro just understands the innocence of children, I really don’t think anyone writes children better. Rewatching this now having seen The Devils Backbone which is the spiritual brother of Pan’s in the way it’s focussed on the children and the impact of war on children in an isolated setting. The way Del Toro weaves his fantasy horror into his films to visualise the imagination of Ofelia whilst she is surrounded and engulfed by the fascist regime of Spain in the 1940’s.
Probably the best of Del Toro’s creature designs especially with the Faun and Pale Man who is equally fascinating and terrifying. Cinematography here is absolutely gorgeous by Guillermo Navarro.
Fantastic film
