Obsession
Fuck A-Level exams I need to watch something every once in a while.
Incredible screenplay, incredible acting and incredible cinematography. Most terrified i’ve been watching a horror film maybe. Not just through jumpscares (plenty of them did make me shit myself) but just through the sheer atmosphere and Inde Navarette’s acting. Bear is a cowardly person who even after so many red flags just refuses to do anything. I would even argue that he exploits Nikki. Even in his last moments he doesn’t have the guts to shoot himself so he chooses the less violent way through pills. Just the absolute visceral imagery and horrifying acting that Navarette brings is hypnotic and stomach churning at the same time.
Probably the most standout moment is the bedroom scene towards the end of the film. Bear is trying to leave the bedroom without Nikki knowing to meet up with Sarah. Nikki, or the real ‘Nikki’ calls out to Bear to kill her. She tells him that she hasn’t been with him this entire time. All Bear has to say is ‘What’s so bad about being with me?’ before leaving Nikki with the entity. Absolute cowardice in its true form. This cemented the idea of Bear being the true villain. At this point he has all the knowledge to say that this is fucked up and stop it but no he’s just scared. Anytime Bear has sex with Nikki, he effectively rapes her. Anytime Bear kisses Nikki, he effectively sexually assaults her. I know that some may think that the director doesn’t emphasise Bear’s exploitation of Nikki and his cowardice but I disagree. It is all laid out through his actions and not even subtly. All throughout the film he’s a massive coward not willing to take responsibility and take a moment to stop and think to himself. Very smart film.
Before watching this not a single person who has seen this gave a bad review which made me think ‘it can’t be that good’. It is. It is that good.
