Dune: Part Two

LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS Goddamn was I happy to give this a rewatch. Dune 2 is a damn near perfect sequel, with one thing holding it back from being truly great (we'll get into that) Dune Part Two continues right where we left off from the first film. While Denis Villeneuve claims it can stand on its own, I disagree. If you haven't seen or if you didn't understand the first one, good luck catching up with this. The first Dune is a must watch to understand Part Two fully. Back to the movie, the story is bigger, it's grander, it's...better? Almost. Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha is incredible. He gives a terrifying performance. Timothee Chalamet also gives a great performance as Paul Atredies. His character was much more interesting to follow in Part Two. And that's just a testament to how incredible his arc actually is. Javier Bardem as Stilgar is so cool. I love that guy. Florence Pugh is gorgeous but a bit underutilized. My only gripe with the film comes from Chani. Zendaya just does not play this character well. I'm tempted to put the first movie above this purely because of the increased screentime Chani gets. Her romance with Paul is so awkward and forced. And it feels like she only reciprocates his feelings for her for plot convenience. It was not believable at all. If she was recast with a better performance, this movie would be perfect. Dune Part Two really shines with its visuals and action sequences. The Harkonnen world has the coolest black and white sequence I've ever seen in a movie. As I mentioned Feyd-Rautha is terrifying. And he eats up every scene he's in. The last fight was really good as well. The sets are beautifully constructed with a nice blend of CGI to enhance it all. Definitely will be getting Oscar buzz all around. Overall I love this movie. It's one of the best I've ever seen. Take Chani out and it's perfection. Or recast. Highly recommend to any lover of cinema and/or sci Fi. Denis Villeneuve is a fucking genius. 10/10 (even with Chani)
