OPAL
this is such an excellent subversion of horror tropes. we have the child protagonist who is forbidden to go into the scary house, but goes anyway because she thinks someone needs help, only to met with all potentially dangerous and mentally unstable people, only for us to realize that they're not violent strangers, but the protagonist own family. that's terrifying and sad. she's so malnourished to the point she have no idea what to do with the hamburger, dancing with it instead of eating it normally. jack stauber's art style feels like a dream. as if the world doesn't exist anymore when you sucked into this. one thing i wanna mention is the dad's design. it's genuinely cool, a father so narcissistic that he can see nothing but himself only. a great representation NPD (narcissistic personality disorder), and an overall great representation of an unstable family. crazy how it managed to accurately portray w child in an abusive household, and even though emotional abuse doesn't leave marks physically, it scarred inside you as badly as if you were beaten. i felt genuine sympathy towards opal/claire. broke me.
