Possession
She had sex with WHAT???
When it comes to directing actors, Andrzej Zulawski is probably one of the all time greats. The way he makes his actors portray their character’s inner turmoil physically is just bonkers to me. And this is his best example of that. There almost isn’t a single scene where some character absolutely tweaking their head off, screaming and writhing in their own mental (now physical) anguish. A film about desire and divorce, having been made soon after Zulawski and his own wife had a divorce, and he’d been essentially exiled from Poland (for a 2nd time). And this sort of separation and longing is permeated in every scene. “When you’re there, you want to be here. And when you’re here you want to be there.”
While I can understand the broad idea of this madness, and some of the color related metaphors, there are others that I can’t figure out. Like the subject with pink socks. No idea what’s going on there. But that doesn’t matter. Not everything needs to be understood, to grasp the meaning of possession isn’t too difficult. After all they’re basically screaming it in your face. Relationships are hard. Especially when they become divided.
