Apocalypse Now
disclaimer: i watched the redux version (3hr 22min)
this movie has some really sick shots and crazy music. one of my favorite scenes was the Do Lung bridge, the weird carnival music and utter chaos of the situation seemed like a weird fever dream in the middle of a warzone.
loved the religious imagery and the idea of going further into hell the more up river the boat went.
the narration was a cool storytelling device, and i think martin sheen had a great performance.
as for the redux version and the scenes that were removed in the theatrical version, i sorta lost interest during the french plantation scene. I definitely appreciated it, as that too seemed like a dream right before entering the final depths of hell, but the arguing at the dinner table dragged on a little too much. additionally, the scene where they meet the bunnies was unnecessary, but was short enough that i didn’t mind it too much, i thought that it was the first taste of the disorganized madness that was approaching as they moved up river.
lastly, i’m not sure if it is Francis Coppola’s style as this is the first film of his i have watched but what was with all the “fade-in” transitions? i suppose it could have been to make everything blend together as one disorienting blur but sometimes i felt it was overused.
would definitely like to watch the theatrical release to see how the pacing differs but overall this film was great.
