Ratcatcher
Another Lynne's Masterpiece
Shi the film's so suffocating to watch it's topics are sensitive asf they reflect the environment and how growing in a toxic environment leads to more and more of toxicity, poverty, arbitrary, volatility and so on and the environment in this film is filled with poverty, rape gang reflect the youths which is scary asf to see their sense in youths around us (which are also effected by the environment which led them to be like ts that's what makes that endless loop),trash all around our early-teens characters which are:
James: he is weighted with a secret that he's the who killed his best friend by accident in addition of his environment in family he had his drunken father his two sisters each one of them has an age gap between them and him so the attachment feels fragile and surrounded by older teens gang he found attachment to a girl who showed him attention (nice male loneliness reflect)
Anne: 14 years old girl under harassment, raping and bully with a mother who doesn't give a fuck and environment so deep in darkness to bother do anything except of someones who say smth now and then in which they blaming the girl(great society reflect showed in a sence, also there is another sence which reflect the bottling up the feelings in general and guilt in the specific sence) she found attachment to first boy who didn't hurt her or tried to use her as if she's nothing except of a body "he made her feel human" that mentioned in requiem for a dream which showed a close relationship to this relationship also we saw her express her feeling to him by physical contact cuz that's the only language she had learned to express the feelings
Anne: represent the innocence surrounded by a dirty environment which in the end we see him started to bound to this environment not dramatically ( the whole film doesn't show events or feelings dramatically which is great cuz most children don't show felling dramatically they bottled it and it shown in another ways as i mentioned above) but in showing him killed a rat (which mentioned a lot in the film ig it represents childhood and innocent)
Farming is sooo gorgeous and as always the musical use in Lynne's films is great
And in the mention of Lynne the directing in this film showd us another side of Lynne's directing which shows also trauma as usual but not in flashbacks like in "u were never really here" or "we need to talk abt kevin" with huge events rather she showed it calmer way suits the young characters and the lack of time gap between the events and she showed the feeling of being stranger in ur own world and in the film James see attachment and feels belong to farmed expanse areas with houses which all the film the fam was planning to move to one of these houses ( it reflect the distant dream which makes the people go on and try to hold on til it comes even if it's almost impossible cuz reality so hard to face when u feel it will be forever an also it reflect political promises to tired citizens) and the house to the kid is a dream not js cuz it will be fun and cozy the real reason that it is distant from his environment he doesn't feel belong to in his child brain he sees it like the home he never had and
(SPOILER)
in the end he gave up this dream forced by the reality and with that he gave up his life cuz what's is meaning without this dream and he throwed himself in the river-same river that his bestfrind died and since then he already died with him with this the film ends in one of the greatest ends I've ever seen
