Oh my god I fucking love this!! It’s probably my favorite Yorgos now. It’s definitely not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it, and the more I think about it the more I love it!!
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, this movie had me STRESSED !
I expected it to be a comedy, and there are some comedic aspects to it, but I found it incredibly sad. It’s such a heartbreaking story about very sad people in a sad world.
There’s so much to say about the themes it explores, and I don’t know if there’s a definitive answer about what the movie is fully about, but I think it really focuses on the disparity in our class system. Our current society drives individuals to crazy places in hopes of finding meaning in their sadness and purpose in their lives. It focuses on the many online radicals who’ve completely lost touch with reality. It’s soooo scary to think about how many people like Teddy exist. And the same goes for Emma’s character Michelle. She’s a cold, money hungry, apathetic CEO destroying the world and the lives of vulnerable people.
And that leads me to one of the things I deeply appreciate about this movie: it doesn’t shy away from what it’s trying to say at all, but it also doesn’t radically vilify either side. The movie never turns into a back and forth between good and evil. By the time we get to the ending that becomes even clearer.
I genuinely never expected to be rooting for the survival of a multi-millionaire healthcare CEO, but here we are. That’s another thing I love. Yorgos puts our empathy to the test, and I think that’s critical right now in the midst of so much EAT THE RICH thinking. I’m not necessarily against it, but being faced with the violence of the actions we’d have to take, kind of changed my perspective a bit. I couldn’t stand seeing Emma Stone’s character go through what she did.
Anyway, I could go on and on about all of this, but this is getting way too long..
But just a few last things lol. I fucking loved the score, it’s so so good. The dialogue is also amazing. Everyone’s performance is great. Emma is always perfect, but Jesse honestly blew me away, he’s phenomenal. And Aidan Delbis who plays Dom, is also fantastic. These kinds of performances lowkey make me want to become an actor.
I have so much more to say, but I need to rewatch it.
I just love it so much, AGHHHH!!
