Before Midnight
that one scene where they’re sitting on the dock watching the sunset and celine is saying “still there,” and once the sun is gone it just pans to both of them, 19 years later, and you can see how they’ve aged despite it all and are now stuck with eachother even in the darkest times. this was a very uncomfortable watch, but that was very much on purpose. i hate the idea that once you marry the love of your life, that love turns into bitterness with constant bickering and arguing; and people are like “no but you’ll make it up!” but its still.. uncomfortable? in the first movie, these two meet up and laugh softly at an older couple arguing; then cut to this one, now theyre the old couple arguing. throughout the two movies they have elaborate, meaningful conversations, but in this one? they’re arguing and looking back on the past as if they don’t have eachother in the present. of course married life isn’t perfect but they were arguing 35% of the movie! why are there so many jokes of sex like thats the best part of love and romance?? thats so sad :( but maybe the point is that despite their disagreements, they still come back for more. the idea that they’ll work it out in a fucked up way but are still contempt with the fact its “til death do us part.”
