Detachment
I have yet to see a movie where Adrien Brody is not insanely depressed and borderline suicidal. Also, for some reason, in every single close up shot, Adrien's head is tilted 30 degrees to either side.
Themes explored in this movie include suicide, prostitution, depression, family issues, generational trauma, etc. Going into this movie, I was obviously expecting sad, heartbreaking themes, but holy shit, this was depressing. Every single character is facing serious issues throughout the movie. And amazing dialogues, monologues, and insane performances by the actors and actresses made the experience even more demoralizing. This movie is stacked with top-tier actors, from Brody to Lucy, and even characters with 2 minute screen time are played by actors like Bryan Cranston. That obviously resulted in an Oscar-worthy acting masterpiece.
A lot of the shots were unexpectedly beautiful and the result of great cinematography. In fact, the visual side of this movie is severely underrated. Especially the last cupcake scene, the symbolism was insane. The Henry's painting was also incredibly beautiful.
Henry and Erica's relationship is also tastefully done. Their ups and downs, lows and highs, and eventually ending where we see them one final time. Similarly to Henry's and his grandpa's. It's so hard to watch Henry's internal struggle regarding his grandparent. The movie implies that he abused Henry's mother, and yet he is stuck taking care of the person who is possibly responsible for his mother's death.
Oh and the chalk font is such a nice touch.
In conclusion, if you want to be emotionally drained and watch Adrien suffer once again, you should definitely give this a shot.
