Gladiator
Nobody creates blueprints for film genres quite like Ridley Scott. Whether it's space horror with Alien, cyberpunk with Bladerunner, or the historical epic with Gladiator, Scott is a cinematic mastermind.
Gladiator is as perfect as a film can possibly be. The cinematography, score, story, pacing, direction, and acting are just immaculate. I watched the whole three hours with goosebumps, especially during the Colosseum scenes. "Are you not entertained?" "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius," and the last showdown between Maximus and Commodus will forever be engraved in my mind. The hype and excitement I felt during those scenes were unreal. But what's crazy is that underneath all the blood and action, the movie actually has a massive heart. There are so many emotional and thought provoking scenes. The film explores topics like revenge, love, corruption of power, honor and duty, and so many more. It really just goes to show that Ridley wasn't just trying to make a flashy action movie. He built a massive, tragic epic that hooks you with the violence but keeps you glued to the screen because you actually give a shit about the characters.
The scale of the movie is so huge. The set pieces, costumes, and production are incredibly realistic and jawdropping. The score and sound need a whole other review. Hans Zimmer is a genius, and he proved it once again. The mood for every scene is set before anything even happens, thanks to amazing sound design and soundtrack. There is an immense amount of content packed into this movie, yet the narrative never drags or feels bloated. It truly is a masterpiece.
In the lead role, Russell Crowe delivers a mesmerizing performance as an honorable general and a slave. Every scene he is in just oozes aura, and you feel nothing but excitement watching him. He is also phenomenal in less action packed scenes and more sad and emotional moments. However, despite his amazing acting, he gets overshadowed by Joaquin Phoenix in almost every scene. He portrayed a power-hungry, insane tyrant with such precision it's crazy. I especially loved the part where he is visibly furious during the gladiator battle and sticks his tongue out from pure hatred and excitement at the same time. Side casts are quite decent, but these two heavily carry the acting aspect.
Gladiator is the movie that deserves all the hype and acclaim it gets. Ignoring a few historical inaccuracies, the movie is just perfect. Given my personal favoritism towards "dad movies," no wonder I loved this film so much
