Napoleon
This is such a difficult movie for me to rate because on the one hand the movie is at times really slow and stale, but on the other hand it is such a masterpiece when it comes to cinematography, score, editing, and so on.
- From the get go I could tell that this movie would be nothing like any other movie I had seen before. I mean it is my first venture into the world of silent films, but it would also be the longest movie I've ever watched. But even though it was a challenge to get through (I had to watch this movie over like 5 days) I was hooked from the start. That snowball scene was such a joy to watch, and by the end when we could see the rapid cuts between young Napoleon and the snowball fight I had a massive grin on my face.
- The second favourite scene of mine (apart from the snowball scene of course) was the famed polyvision scene at the end of the movie. There was something about it which just pulled me in. I couldn't get my eyes off of the screen. I have to admit I found it both funny and clever when the three different images on screen formed the French flag.
- I think the last thing I want to really mention is the score for this movie. It's just absolutely incredible. Might be one of my new favourite scores for a movie.
- Oh and if I could travel back in time I would provide Abel Gance with the funding for him to make the other five movies for his original six part series about Napoleon.
