I get it. I finally get why Tarkovsky is Tarkovsky. What is faithful art worth in a world where faith is so sunjective? Why do we create, why do we explore? No other film I’ve seen has felt so beautiful and disgusting at the same time. Watching the characters smear mud on their faces, walls and hands is so disgusting yet kinda calming. For once, I felt the world get under my skin. The Siege of Vladimir… what a sequence. Both awe inspiring and viciously horrifying. Same with the Bell making, Pagan ritual and- oh what the hell, all if it is stunning!! How Tarkovsky could make a decade sweeping epic so intimate yet bombastic is mind melting. Need to watch all of Tarkovsky’s other films ASAP.
