Babylon
10/10
Holy shit, what a feeling it was to watch this, after so much waiting to watch it, I finally came around to it. Chazelle was my highest rated director before this and this has just confirmed it, the three films, that I’ve seen, all 5 stars. This also proves my love for Metacinema, and between this and Anguish I do prefer this.
Margot Robbie puts in one of her best performances ever, and dialed up the levels compared to her Wolf of Wall Street character in terms of the things she does, crazy. It’s also clear that every single person that is on screen puts in a perfect performance with no wrongs. Now I think I connect more with this film due to it being based on the industry I one day hope to work in, but this story focuses on the biggest change in cinema history, the transition from silent films to “talkies”. With a 3 hour runtime, it doesn’t feel like that at all, the whole thing being pure bat-shit crazy scenes, and I’m here for it. So many scenes which are executed to absolute perfection, especially the ending, a beyond perfect ending. With scenes showing that despite what they went through to get where they are now, it was all worth it, they completely changed the present and future of cinema, and that was told so well. Despite majority of the film being crazy and sometimes hilarious, I thought it was absolutely devastating during the final act, some very sad moments that were truly gut-wrenching to sit there and just watch, and those are the type of films I love.
I cannot believe that this was a huge flop, I don’t understand why, yes it’s 3 hours long, but it is truly a masterpiece once you witness it. One of the best movies I have seen in a looong time.
