"Tarkovsky is religious and we are not… he always had hope, he believed in God. The rain in his films purifies people. In mine, it just makes mud" - Béla Tarr

Freudian/Jungian cinema at its best

got recommended this film so many times, and I wanted to love it, but by the time the first hour passed, I was completely checked out and felt absolutely nothing. the opening shot deserved so much more. it’s promising in almost every aspect, but there’s not nearly enough character development or care given to the narrative to make you feel anything for these people. the drama is completely invisible. it’s all style over substance, and when I say style… I mean it attempts to do a really vanilla Wong Kar-ian impression, which hurts to say because this has the same cinematographer from **In** **The Mood For Love**. does it have a spirit? sure. does it have a soul? I don’t believe so. is it worth watching? sure.

Kieślowski is a master of cinematic language, and the putrified, wet-piss stained visual corrosion of Warsaw isn’t tarnished by its inhabitants, but by the hearts of the men who run and control it. brilliant writing. brilliant ending.
