Eraserhead
Eraserhead (1977)
Written, Directed, and Produced by David Lynch
Starring Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Laurel Near, and Jack Fisk.
Story: Eraserhead takes place in Henry Spencers nightmare and we see him live out all of his insecurities.
The Bad: The fact that this film was set in a nightmare is something that is not told in the film. Obviously that would be difficult to explain in a film like this but I feel like its something that should be more clear because I had no idea that it took place in a nightmare during my first watch.
The Good: For my 100th review I decided I'd talk about one of my favorite films... Eraserhead. One thing I love about this film is that my plot synopsis could be totally different if written by someone else because you could interpret this in many different ways. I view it as Henry enduring his fear of fatherhood and the baby being an alien looking creature propels this. The soundtrack for this film is extremely eerie and gives each scene an off putting presence that sets the tone for the entire film and there is very little dialog so you just hear the music as Henry reacts to whatever it is in that scene and the music in a way takes place of the dialog. Speaking of Henry, I thought he was an intriguing character who constantly looks awkward and uncomfortable in every situation he's in which makes the film feel way more unsettling. The make up is astounding with characters like Lady in the Radiator, (who is disturbing in every scene she's in) and Man in the Planet who looks human but at the same time looks unnatural and rotten almost. This is David Lynch's theatrical debut and its unbelievable how his first film can be a masterpiece that people still talk about today.
