Story: Lake Mungo is a mocumentary about the mystery and paranormal activities following the disappearance of Alice Palmer.
The Bad: We find out in the film that June Palmer would go inside peoples homes just to feel a sense of normalcy and I think that's a good story beat, however there are no consequences to these actions, and its not like its a secret either, it's her friend who tells the audience about it. To me it doesn't really make sense, especially since the Palmers talked with authorities quite often.
The Good: Lake Mungo just might be one of the most underrated horror films I've ever seen. This is my third time watching it and the scares are still unsettling, especially the premonition scene which still scares me every single time I watch it and if you know me you'd know that I don't get scared easily. This film doesn't use jumpscares or anything like that, what the film will do is show you a fairly normal scene then they'll say "and then we looked back on the footage and saw this" and there was something standing in the corner the entire time. It's deeply disturbing, especially when you're re watch it and you can see the figure before its pointed out to you. But this film is much deeper than a scary horror movie, its truly a film about how we cope with death and how others move on from it. I won't get into to much detail because I have a feeling most haven't seen this but this film goes on so many twist and turns and peels back layer by layer the truth about Alice Palmer. The found footage aspect is also realistic and I bet you that if you showed this to someone without telling them that this is a film, they'd probably think this is an actual documentary.
