Crash
in cronenberg fashion this film explores our cultural tendency toward the association between sex and horror. I have never seen it done like this though. It’s not the same kind of horror. it’s a tragic, traumatic, deeply personal kind that most people have been through in some way. with this a certain section of the audience cronenberg attracts has a mirror held to them. Is death or pain any less tragic when it’s at the hands of a psychopath with a mask on? or is that abstraction just a psychological difference. one that let’s us feel okay about the satisfaction we get from voyeuristically watching a character suffering. of course this is taken to an extreme as the film goes on, and the result is incredibly disturbing, yet somehow doesn’t feel exploitative. which is very impressive considering the content.
