And yet… visually stunning in a way that makes you feel guilty for admiring it. 1630s France during plague hysteria, Catholics vs Protestants tearing each other apart, and sexual repression bubbling under strict orthodox Christianity like a pressure cooker ready to explode. It’s filth and theology colliding in the most unholy way possible. Oliver Reed was BORN for this role. The macho charm? Devouring the screen. The eloquent dialogue delivery? Effortless. And when the vulnerability slips through? Yeah… he eats that too. I watched the uncut version and that chapel exorcism scene… genuinely one of the most aggressively anti-Christian, surreal, unhinged sequences I’ve ever witnessed. I was staring at the screen like ???? Ken Russell really said subtlety is overrated and swung for the heavens (very Altered States-core energy). That closing scene? Haunting. Chilling. Unforgettable.
