Wow. Having this film directly after The Master was an all-time great decision, this film was nothing short of excellent. There is so much to talk about here. Daniel Day Lewis gives his second masterful PTA performance here. It's hard to say this, it's hard to say anything, rivals his There Will Be Blood performance, but this presence is not swept away by any means. The actress who plays Alma also does an incredible job here, she just knocks it out of the park. But what I'd like to speak about the most is my history with his film, despite this being my first watch. A few months ago, I discovered this movie's best song, "House of Woodcock". I tied it to a girl I liked at the time (and still do to this day), and it's stuck with me ever since. Every time that song plays, there is nothing in my mind but the thought of her. So when I watched this film and heard how it was used, it moved me deeply. Despite the arguments and disconnects between Reynolds and Alma, Reynolds truly viewed her as someone with such pure beauty, almost as if she was tailored to him. I feel a similar way about this girl, even if that may sound a bit hasty. She, to me, is akin to a breathtaking sculpture just as much as she is a Woodcock dress, a beach's sunset, or a wonderful meal. In summation of all that, Jonny Greenwood made an all-time great soundtrack that may just be my all-time favorite. This film truly shows why Paul Thomas Anderson is so special.
